La historia detrás de la historia.
El proyecto “Las Mujeres de Pedro Guzmán ” creció en un intento por desarrollar un documental animado que retrata las condiciones de vida y el rol de las mujeres durante la primera mitad del siglo XX en Colombia.
Todo empezó durante mis estudios de Máster en Media Art & Design en Alemania. Decidí dar forma a una historia que había escrito años atrás. Estos apuntes y bocetos, más parecidos a una novela gráfica no tenían otra finalidad que llevar un registro de anécdotas y sucesos familiares que moldeaban las dinámicas de las mujeres en mi familia. Sin embargo, fue durante un estudio de caso, en el festival DOKLeipzig 2016 que una estudiante de arte, Anja Kofmel, compartió su “proyecto Chris the Swiss”- la desaparición de su primo en medio de la guerra de Yugoslavia.
En la conferencia ella habló abiertamente de las luchas y vicisitudes mientras creaba la historia y también mencionó el apoyo financiero que encontró para transformar sus bocetos en una película de animación. En ese momento sentí la necesidad de compartir la historia de mi familia, y al igual que ella, comencé con la intención de crear un documental animado. Había contemplado usar ilustraciones y animaciones para mostrar aspectos de la historia que me parecían imposibles de representar con el material real, sin embargo, a medida que la historia evolucionaba, la narrativa de la película cambió por sí misma.
Después de afrontar varias vicisitudes, decidí en el montaje combinar las imágenes de las grabaciones y varias illustraciones que había empezado a incluir en la novela gráfica.

The story behind the story...
The project "Las Mujeres de Pedro Guzmán" began as an attempt to develop an animated documentary that portrays the living conditions and the role of women during the first half of the 20th century in Colombia.
Everything started during my Master's studies. I decided to give shape to a project of an intimate experience I had written years back. These notes had no purpose but to keep track of specific family issues. However, it was during an event (case studies) at the DOKLeipzig 2016 festival, a Russian art student, Anja Kofmel, presented her "work in progress" about the disappearance of her cousin in the midst of the Yugoslav War. At the conference, she openly talked about her struggles while creating the story and also mentioned the financial support she found to transform her sketches into an animated film.
At that moment, I felt the need to share my family story, and as well as her, it began as an attempt to create an animated documentary. As a graphic designer and illustrator had considered using drawings and animations to depict aspects of the story that seemed impossible to represent with the real footage. However, as the story evolved, the narrative of the movie changed by itself.
After a lot of back and forth, I combined the real footage and various sketches I had begun to include from the graphic novel.

Sinopsis:
“Las mujeres de Pedro Guzmán" es un documental que muestra los efectos del maltrato sufrido por las mujeres de mi familia; ellas fueron inmensamente vapuleadas por sus padres y esposos, igualmente menospreciadas por la sociedad de la época. Para sobrevivir, aprendieron a callar y a someterse a las convenciones de la época. Desde ahí, se infundió un sentimiento de indefensión, asimismo un miedo al abandono que se sigue perpetuando.
Aunque pertenezco a otra generación, también he reproducido estos patrones de los cuales apenas me hago consciente. De ahí que el filme hace una reflexión frente a estas creencias inconscientes y explica la manera tan particular en que podemos transmitir una experiencia de vida de un individuo a otro, de una generación a la otra. Igualmente enfatiza en la personalidad de mi abuela y la mentalidad machista empleada en la crianza de sus once hijos, ocho de ellas mujeres. Tan sólo se trata de explicar como yo asumí toda esa información desde pequeña y como todo esto moldeó mi manera de ver el mundo.

Synopsis:
“The women of Pedro Guzmán" is a documentary that portrays the consequences of the mistreatment experienced by the women of my family; my female ancestors, counting from my grandmother's generation and back, were immensely oppressed and abused by their fathers and husbands, likewise, belittled by the society of that time (early nineteen-hundreds). To survive, they numbed their feelings and learned to silence their voices. Since then, a belief of helplessness was instilled, as well as a fear of abandonment.
I have also reproduced these patterns, although I belong to a different generation. Hence, the film reflects on these unconscious beliefs and depicts the peculiar way in which we can convey a life experience from one individual to another, from one generation to the next. The film highlights my grandmother's tenacious personality and the chauvinist mentality employed while raising eleven children, eight of them women. It's just a way of explaining how I understood this information from a very young age and how it shaped how I see the world.
